How to Set Up a Drag-and-Drop Canva Template

If you want to sell Canva templates, land brand clients, or offer freebies your audience will actually use, drag-and-drop layouts are a game changer. These templates make it easy for users to swap in their content, fast—no design skills required. Here’s how to set one up in Canva from scratch!

🖥️ Step 1: Set Your Dimensions

Log in at www.canva.com and click “Create a Design”Custom Size. Common sizes for drag-and-drop templates:

  • Instagram Post – 1080 x 1080 px
  • Instagram Story – 1080 x 1920 px
  • US Letter (Printables, Workbooks, Forms) – 8.5 x 11 in

📦 Step 2: Create Image Placeholders

To make the layout drag-and-drop ready, use the “Elements” tab and search for “Frames.” Choose a frame shape (square, circle, phone mockup, etc.) and place it where you want the user to insert their image.

💡 Once your customer gets the template, all they have to do is drag an image into the frame—and Canva will auto-crop and size it perfectly. This keeps the layout consistent and easy to use!

🔠 Step 3: Add Editable Text

Use the “Text” tab to add headings, subheadings, and body text boxes. Don’t flatten or group these—leave them fully editable so users can change font, size, and content without breaking the design.

Stick with easy-to-read fonts and align everything consistently for that pro feel.

🔗 Step 4: Share It As a Template

Once your layout is done, click “Share”“Template Link”“Share a link to use as template.” This creates a unique URL that makes a copy of your template when someone clicks it—no Canva Pro needed on their end.

Include this link in your product file, listing description, or content freebie bundle. Done and done! 💀
